About Doug Wewer

Doug Wewer "Snowflakes are among the most delicate and beautiful illustrations of God's creativity." Doug Wewer has been photographing snowflakes in Utah's Wasatch Range since 2009. He specializes in capturing real snowflakes wherever they fall, on a variety of surfaces, including wood and glass. He is constantly experimenting with new techniques, using his engineering skills to customize or build his own equipment. Doug has loved snow his entire life, and spends as much time as he can on skis in the mountains. As a ski patroller and avalanche professional, he has looked at countless snow crystals through a variety of lenses. When he realized that these tiny, delicate snowflakes could be captured by camera, a whole new adventure began. Now, when the conditions are right, you will often find Doug outside in the cold, with his headlamp and camera, trying to capture "just one more" snowflake. It has evolved into his own personal treasure hunt; one that he would like to share with you. One of the most frequent asked questions I receive is "Are they real?" Yes, the snowflakes are real! Each one is a unique snowflake that fell from the sky. I typically have minutes or seconds to position the camera, focus and snap the shutter before the snowflake shrinks or melts. The backgrounds are the real backgrounds the snowflake landed on - wood, painted wood, glass, etc. The snowflakes are magnified many times. Some of the smallest would easily fit on the tip of a ballpoint pen. Some of the largest I've seen are almost the size of a dime. Besides using the standard developing tools available in Lightroom (color, sharpening, cropping, etc.) the photos are not manipulated in any way. Focus-stacking software has not been used to enhance any of the images. Snowflakes are inherently imperfect. In fact, the vast majority of snowflakes that land on my porch are broken to pieces and honestly wouldn't make very good photographs. Some days, I spend hours scanning through hundreds and thousands of snowflakes to find the few that are intact, symmetrical and fall in a position they can be photographed. And many of these shrink (sublimate), melt or are covered by another snowflake before I am able to photograph a clear image. It is truly a rare and wonderful thing to find a perfect, symmetrical, clear, crisp snowflake that has not been rimed or broken by crashing into it's neighbors during it's fall from the sky. I feel fortunate to have experienced so many of these beautiful snowflakes and would like to share them with you. I hope you enjoy each one and grow to appreciate them like I do.
